Tour the Most Fascinating Caverns & Caves in Arkansas

The geology and landscape of the Ozarks are spectacular—millions of years of erosion of limestone, sand, and fossil beds created these caverns, gorges, and caves in Arkansas. These behemoth underground landmarks are great to visit all year round, as they are warmer in the chillier months and cooler in the peak of summer.

Here are three caves in Arkansas to consider visiting during your next getaway to Eureka Springs.

  1. Just a quick ten-minute drive from our Eureka Springs Bed and Breakfast, the Onyx Cave was first discovered in 1891. It’s the oldest show cave open to the public in Arkansas. As you enter this cavern, you can partake in the self-guided audio tour informing you all about the various chambers and rock formations. As with most caves in Arkansas, in the summer, this cavern will feel a bit cooler than the temperature above ground. A perfect way to chill out on a hot, sunny day!
  2. Cosmic Cavern is Arkansas’s largest privately owned show cave—it was discovered in 1845 but didn’t start welcoming visitors until 1927. Cosmic Cavern’s cave tour is approximately one hour and 15 minutes. You’ll walk through one of the warmest caves in Arkansas, which is a steady 64 degrees and 96% humidity all year round. The cave boasts impressive features, such as a 9-foot soda straw—the longest one known in the Ozarks, and two bottomless cave lakes. South Lake has been home to trout for over 50 years, causing some of them to lose their color and sight, which is a fascinating phenomenon to witness. Another lake, referred to as “silent splendor,” was uncovered in 1993 and is known for its pristine and clear waters, making it one of the most memorable sights. Cosmic Cavern’s beauty makes it one of the most stunning caves in Arkansas!
  3. Make sure to visit War Eagle Cavern on Beaver Lake, one of the largest caves in Arkansas. The cave boasts three magnificent stories and over four miles of trails to explore. While along the guided tour of the cave, you’ll wander by a stream that flows through the cavern, hear fascinating information on the domes and formations, and get a unique glimpse into the underground world near Eureka Springs. The temperature stays at an average of 58 degrees all year round.
