Hiking the Ozarks is a Blast!

Arkansas has over 1,500 miles of hiking trails.  The Ozark Mountain trails are some of the most beautiful trails to be explored in the entire state.  The beauty of hiking the Ozarks is that there is a trail for all ages and skill level.  From easy paved paths to strenuous trails through the mountains, it’s a great way to breathe in the fresh mountain air and take in the region’s natural beauty.

Right here in Eureka Springs is Lake Leatherwood City Park.  The park offers 1,600 acres of countryside in the Ozarks and is next to an 85 acre spring fed lake.  The Leatherwood Loop in the park is an easy and beautiful hike that runs 3.96 miles roundtrip.  The trail is well maintained and the loop winds around the lake.  The Overlook Trail is a 2.5 mile loop that leads to a bluff overlooking Leatherwood Dam.  For the most challenging trail in the park, check out The Twin Knobs Trail.  Physically challenging, this 3 mile trail climbs over 300 vertical feet.  The views on this trail are best seen in winter and spring but the hike is challenging and fun any time of year.

Scenic Buffalo National River is home to a plethora of hiking trails each unique in what they offer in terms of scenery and terrain.  The Koen Interpretive trail is an easy hike and wheelchair accessible.  There are benches to stop for breaks and also educational panels describing the 34 different kinds of trees and plants to be seen along the way.  The Alum Cove Trail is a 1.1 mile trail that leads to a natural rock bridge.  Another easy trail is the Lost Valley trail.  This trail is 3 miles, moderate in difficulty and passes by cliffs, bluff shelters, a natural bridge and leads to a cave that ends in a large room with a 35-foot waterfall.

Roaring River State Park has an abundance of fun trails to explore.  The Devil’s Kitchen Interpretive Trail is a 1.5 mile loop that takes about an hour to complete.  About halfway through the trail, there is a rock formation that forms an underground enclosure.  Hikers will enjoy climbing down the boulders and into the room.  Leading to the highest point in the park is the Eagle’s Nest Trail.  This 2.3 mile loop follows along a river and is lined with lilac bushes and yucca plants.  The Fire Tower Trail is just like it sounds.  There is a two-story lookout located about halfway through this 3.5 mile loop.

The Ozark Highlands Trail is rated as one of the most scenic trails in the United States.  The trail runs for 218 miles and through seven counties.  The trail is known for its mountainous terrain, clear springs, unique rock formations and scenic views.  When visiting the Arkansas region, let Arsenic and Old Lace bed and breakfast in Eureka Springs be the place to welcome you back after a long day on the trails.  There are five relaxing and spacious guest suites to choose from, a gourmet breakfast served each morning and a beautiful wrap around veranda to enjoy the surrounding hills and gardens.  There’s something for everyone here at Arsenic and Old Lace.  Reservations can be made online or by calling 1-866-350-5454.
