Blue Spring Heritage Center

The Blue Spring Heritage Center is a truly remarkable place, and should be near the top of your list of things to do in Eureka Springs.  The Blue Spring Heritage Center has been open since 1948, and does a remarkable job capturing the rich history of the Ozark region.  From enjoying walks through a beautiful 33-acre garden (formerly known as the Eureka Springs Gardens), to learning about regional history through photos and artifacts, the heritage center has it all.

The namesake for the heritage center, Blue Spring, has long been considered to hold some of the purest water in the region, and was once considered sacred by Native American Tribes. Blue Spring was once the trading post for the Osage Indians, sending goods down the White River to New Orleans. In addition, Blue Spring was an important destination along the infamous Trail of Tears, once treated as a respite and renewal site for the Cherokee people during their forced march from Echota, Georgia. Also at Blue Spring Heritage Center is the Bluff Shelter, which has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places.  Archeological digs here have uncovered many prehistoric artifacts, shellfish and the bones of deer, turtle, and other fauna, some of which date back as far as 8000 BC., cementing the Bluff Shelter’s place in history as a historically significant ceremonial ground.

The Blue Spring Heritage Center opened for the season on March 15, 2018, and will continue daily operation through the 2nd Sunday of November, 2018.
