It is no wonder that Arkansas is known as The Natural State. Arkansas is home to an abundance of lakes and streams, 3 national forests and picturesque mountains with plenty of hiking trails to explore. Some of the most beautiful mountains in Arkansas include Petit Jean Mountain, the Ozark Mountains and the Ouachita Mountains. Here’s just a little bit about each mountain and what makes them so special.
The Ouachita Mountains
The Ouachita Mountains run through the western part of Arkansas and also through a part of Oklahoma. The highest peak of the Ouachita Mountains is Mount Magazine. This area has two peaks: Signal Hill and Mossback Ridge. In the foothills of the Ouachita Mountains lies Pinnacle Mountain. With an elevation of 1,011 feet, it rises 750 feet above the Arkansas River. Pinnacle Mountain is also home to the West Summit Trail which is one of the most heavily used trails in Arkansas. The trail runs 1.5 miles round trip and boasts views of Lake Maumelle, west Little Rock and the Arkansas River Valley. Shinall Mountain can also be found in the foothills of the Ouachita Mountains and is known for its many broadcast towers built on top. Many radio stations are also set up on Shinall Mountain.
The Ozark Mountains
The Ozark Mountains run not only through Arkansas but also in parts of Missouri, Oklahoma and Kansas. The Ozarks occupy an area of about 50,000 square miles. White Rock Mountain is one of the highest points of the Ozark Mountains in Arkansas. The overlook at the top of White Rock offers some of the most amazing views of Arkansas. White Rock Mountain is named for its white peaks which are actually due to lichen that grows on the rocks. Located in the Ozark National Forest, the public can enjoy daily hiking on the many trail systems offered and camping at the first come first serve camping spaces of White Rock. The Boston Mountains are home to the highest peaks of the Ozarks at 2,000 feet. Also in the Boston Mountains is the Ozark Highlands Trail. This trail travels over 200 miles throughout Arkansas and is known as being one of the most scenic trails in America. Passing through the Ozark National Forest and the Buffalo National River State Park, with views of the lush forests, mountain streams and strenuous terrain, this trail is a must when visiting the Boston Mountains.
Petit Jean Mountain
Petit Jean Mountain is located between the Ozarks and the Ouachita Mountains. This mountain stands 1,000 feet above the Arkansas River Valley and stretches about 5.5 miles east to west. Petit Jean State Park is located on the top of the mountain and includes hiking trails and overlooks. This area is a popular tourist destination because of their pools, picnic areas and kids playground.
