Fall Foliage in Eureka Springs

The warm sunny days and cool nights in August and September are what allow the sugars to develop and the chlorophylls to be destroyed in leaves, which both ultimately lead to the dramatic and fiery shades of reds, oranges, and golds of fall.  Eureka Springs itself has earned a spot in the top five places to view fall foliage in the U.S. by TripAdvisor; quite the honor when you consider the traditional foliage hotspots like Vermont and New Hampshire. Here are some of our favorite spots to see Mother Nature’s annual show in and around the Eureka Springs area:

  • Hawksbill Crag has not only been called the best place for a selfie as well as the most romantic spot in the state, but it’s also an incredible place to look out over a sea of fall colors.
  • The Buffalo Natural River is incredible at any point in the year, but none more so than fall. It was the first designated national river in the U.S., and never fails to disappoint during these crisp autumn months.
  • Fall foliate in Eureka SpringsTake a scenic drive through the winding mountain roads of the Ozarks, stopping as often as you like to soak in the dramatic vistas unfolding before you. Many of the state’s scenic byways are incredible during the fall. The stretches between Highways 23 and 16, as well as between highways 7 to 62 are beautiful during the fall.
  • For a thrill ride through the Ozark Mountains and a whole new way to enjoy fall foliage, visit Ozark Mountain Ziplines.  With courses running upwards of 200+ feet in the air, ziplining provides a fun filled activity for all ages.
  • Take a hike in Dogwood Canyon, which stretch over 10,000 acres on the Missouri-Arkansas border, and offers exceptional views of the Ozark Mountains. Other great hiking areas this fall include Pigeon Creek on Lake Norfolk, Pedestal Rocks trail and the Kings Bluff trail.
