May Festival of the Arts: Fun After 5 and the Artrageous Street Festival

Friday, May 10th, 2013

As we continue our coverage of the May Festival of the Arts in Eureka Springs, we share with you some other outstanding events coming up in May – we hope you can join us.

May 24 – Creative Energy Project & Eureka Street Market. The Creative Energy Project conducts impressive community art creations in Eureka Springs. Here is a little blurb about the project and their mission:

“Energy fuels and finesses creativity; propelling the paintbrush and pen, powering our vision, giving form to the words we use to speak. Beyond the tangible is a subtler kind of energy; unpredictable and elusive: Creative Energy. At the genesis of every creative idea is this energy of inspiration. It births art itself, transcends space and time to speak the thoughts of the artist long after the artist’s work is done…What is certain is that this is the wellspring of imagination. Our goal is to capture Creative Energy as it is applied to the world around us in creative visual expression. To show unquantifiable imagination in the environments that we inhabit every day. This is the Creative Energy Project.” – The Creative Energy Project

Here is a video about a recent Creative Energy Project by Robert Norman:

May 25 – Artrageous Fair in Basin Park. Enjoy music and art in beautiful Basin Park! Free and open to everyone from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Enjoy a children’s art section, live music and lots of artists with their work for sale and on display.

Come to Eureka Springs for the weekend and take home a piece of art you can treasure!

The St. Patrick’s Day Parade is Coming!

Tuesday, February 12th, 2013

While the Mardi Gras parades have all run their course, more fun is to be had in the streets of Eureka Springs. The Saint Patrick’s Day parade is taking place on Saturday March 16th this year.

As the old saying goes, “If you’re lucky enough to be Irish, you’re lucky enough!” For the rest of us, St. Patrick’s Day is one of Eureka Springs’ major holidays and it is a chance to be Irish in spirit if not in genealogy.

The parade will start on Spring St. at 2 p.m. and wind its way to the courthouse downtown, less than a mile from our Inn. Come in green and you will be invited to march in the parade. What fun!  An annual event since 1993, the parade is very colorful,  just like Eureka Springs.

The parade is headed by the Krewe of Blarney Halfast Walkin’ Klub. The Kaptains consists of professionals, business men and political officials, all wearing tuxedos carrying Flower Canes. There is also usually a pub crawl downtown – get yourself a pint of green beer!

A Little ‘Saint Patrick’ History

I think he would approve of green beer, don't you?

I think he would approve of green beer, don’t you?

St. Patrick (circa 340 to 460 AD) was a British-born Christian missionary and is one of the three patron saints of Ireland. Patrick, captured by Irish raiders at age 16 and taken from his native Wales to Ireland as a slave, lived there six years before escaping. After entering the church, he returned to Ireland as a missionary. By the eighth century he had become the patron saint of Ireland.

It appears Patrick was active as a missionary in Ireland during the second half of the fifth century. Two letters from him survive, along with later hagiographies — books of saints’ lives — from the seventh century onward.
Pious legend credits Patrick with banishing snakes from the island, though all evidence suggests that post-glacial Ireland never had snakes. One suggestion is that snakes referred to the serpent symbolism of the Druids of that era. Legend also credits Patrick with teaching the Irish about the concept of the Trinity by showing people the shamrock, or three-leaf clover, using it as a metaphor for that Christian belief.
March 17 is believed to be his death date and is the date celebrated as his feast day. St. Patrick has never been formally canonized by a Pope. Even so, he is still widely venerated in Ireland and elsewhere today.

October 19-20, 26-27, 2012 Voices from Eureka’s Silent City

Sunday, September 16th, 2012
Actress playing Civil War role

Voices from Eureka’s Silent City includes “Living HIstory” actors portraying the lives of citizens affected by the Civil War.

5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday & Saturdays
These popular and educational cemetery tours bring to life the voices of Eureka Springs’ past. The setting and timing before Halloween is just right as the days grow shorter and we settle into autumn. Sponsored by the Eureka Springs Historical Museum, the tours will focus on Civil War veterans and their lives after they returned to Eureka Springs.

Live costumed actors will perform the “Living History” of the tour, playing the roles of veterans and survivors and telling their stories. Truly, these actors breathe life into the experiences of those who lived through the Civil War. It brings a much more personal perspective to events which are often hidden by the dry facts and figures of historical records.

Another highlight of the tours will be Doug Kidd’s demonstrations within an exhibit of a Civil War surgery tent. It will be an informative presentation which will also make you greatly appreciate the wonders of modern medicine!

There’s no parking at the cemetery, but shuttles will take visitors to the cemetery from the parking lot at the Victoria Inn (4028 East Van Buren on Highway 62).

Admission & Tickets
Tours are one hour and 15 minutes. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under. You can purchase tickets from the Eureka Springs Historical Museum (95 S. Main St.), the Eureka Springs Chamber of Commerce (516 Village Circle Drive), or at any Cornerstone bank. If you don’t pre-purchase you ticket, don’t worry. You can also buy a ticket right at the parking lot. For more information on Voices from Eureka’s Silent City 2012, please visit EurekaSpringsHistoricalMuseum.org/fall-voices-tour.

It’s Summer Camp Season in the Ozarks

Sunday, July 1st, 2012
Children Camping

Ozarks summer camps keep children entertained while giving them a chance to meet new friends, get out and play, and learn useful skills.

It’s that time of year when the kids go off to make their own lasting summertime memories. Hopefully, they’ll have the same opportunities many of us had: time to slow down, get away from the routines of home and school, make new friends and learn new skills (or try to anyway). Ah…summer camp! It’s an especially beautiful experience here with the surrounding rivers, lakes and Ozark Mountains.

There are a number of summer camps offered in and around the Ozarks. A very popular camp is just over the border in Missouri. Kanakuk Kamps provides a premier Christian summer camp experience for youth ages 7-18. Fun and educational programs are age-appropriate and children enjoy the benefits of quality staff and facilities offering over 70 activities and sports. Parents can rest assured that their children are playing and learning in a safe and enriching place at Kanakuk Kamps.

Camp Barnabas is also nearby, in Purdy, Missouri. This Christian summer camp serves people with special needs and chronic illnesses, giving them a chance to learn, play and experience the beauty of the Ozarks in a safe, supportive environment. Camp Barnabas is a very special summer camp giving children opportunities they’ll remember for the rest of their lives.

While the kids are at camp, parents can also have a chance to get away from it all. Come to our Eureka Springs bed and breakfast to reconnect with nature and with each another. Treat yourselves to one of our luxurious guest rooms, suites or the Pearl Tatman Guest House and make it your home away from home.

There are so many things to see and do in Eureka Springs, you’ll want to return to enjoy them all. Eureka Springs’ Victorian charm is enhanced by the fine cultural and dining experiences available. The beautiful Ozarks Arkansas region also offers natural and man-made wonders such as the Cosmic Cavern and Thorncrown Chapel. Parents can have their own “summer camp,” seeing and learning new things, or just basking and relaxing in nature.

When camp is done, it’s just a short drive to pick up your children. What a refreshing way for the whole family to enjoy the summer break!

Intrigue Theater in Eureka Springs

Intrigue Theater, illusionist and medium

Intrigue Theater in Eureka Springs.

There is intriguing theater happening in Eureka Springs these days, or at least Intrigue Theater. It’s worth a look the next time you’re at our Eureka Springs Bed and Breakfast. It may even be worth a special trip.

What is Intrigue Theatre? It’s “astounding” says Jacqueline Froelich of KAUAF Public Radio. It will blow your mind says Matt Dunn of Scream Town. It will keep you at the edge of your seat says Trip Advisor.

Intrigue Theater is a fabulous collaboration between an Illusionist and a Medium. Special Guests from “the other side” are featured as well. It’s classic Victorian Era entertainment, and it’s the perfect way to spend an evening in Eureka Springs.

Intrigue Theater will be at the Historic Gavioli May 17 through June 23 and at the Historic Auditorium June 28 through October 28, 2012. Performances run Thursdays through Sundays, and holiday Mondays.

Tickets and additional information are available at Intrigue Theater.

The second Saturday evening of the month is a festive occasion here in Eureka Springs, at least April through December. Art galleries open their doors from 6 – 9 p.m. for the 2nd Saturday Gallery Stroll, highlighting special shows and artist receptions. People wander from gallery to gallery, admiring art. More than one guest of our Eureka Springs Bed and Breakfast has returned from the Gallery Stroll with a new treasure tucked under the arm.

The galleries of Eureka Springs.

Our Eureka Springs Bed and Breakfast is close to the Historic Downtown area and the 2nd Saturday Gallery Stroll. Guests who don’t mind walking up and down some pretty impressive hills may leave their cars at the inn and leisurely stroll to and from art. Parking is available for those who would rather drive.

Eureka Springs New Great Passion Play

Wednesday, May 11th, 2011

The New Great Passion Play opened for the season in Eureka Springs last Friday, May 6. It is scheduled to run several nights a week through October 29, 2011, as it has for more than 40 years. People come from all over the world to see the play, and many stay in our Eureka Springs Bed and Breakfast while they’re here.

The Great Passion Play in Eureka Springs tells the story of Christ’s last days on earth, his death, and his resurrection. The cast of hundreds gives a stirring performance in a stunning location – a 4,100 seat panoramic outdoor amphitheater nestled in the Ozark Mountains surrounding Eureka Springs. The set and scenery are remarkably accurate; spectators witness chariots being pulled past an ancient marketplace, a camel caravan, and even herds of sheep.

Experience The Great Passion Play when you visit Eureka Springs.

Guests of our Eureka Springs Bed and Breakfast who attend The Great Passion Play frequently comment on the magnificent Christ of the Ozarks statue that is located on the grounds. The sculpted statue of Christ stands seven stories tall and seems to rise out of the mountain on which it stands. It is inspiring to stand at its feet.

The Great Passion Play is perhaps the most unique attraction in Eureka Springs. It is a remarkable experience for people of all faiths.

For additional information and tickets, please visit The Great Passion Play.
