Art Gallery Stroll
6 – 9 p.m. Art galleries throughout downtown Eureka Springs host this monthly event (every second Saturday from April to December and every Saturday in May) to encourage after dinner visitors to enjoy the evening air and take in some inspiration from local artists. Partake in special shows and artist receptions.

Eureka Thyme gallery (19 Spring St.) offers local art and fine crafts. On Saturday May 11, Eureka Thyme will host an artist reception for Carol Dickie. Meet Carol and see her lovely landscape paintings from 1-4 and 6-9 p.m.

2 – 5; 6:30 – 9 p.m. The Jewel Box Gallery (40 Spring St.) will host artist Johnny Ray as he demonstrates his painting skills. Ray’s work is known for crisp details, strong colors and realism. Subjects include architecture, wildlife and fire fighting scenes.

What is a Zip Line?

From a structural standpoint, the zip line tour is a system of cables and platforms, wherein the participant “zips” through the treetops wearing a safety harness secured to the cable. Wooden platforms suspended by cables serve as a landing base in each tree that you “zip” to and from. You also launch from limestone cliffs. All natural and minimal hiking on clear trails brings you to the bottom of the gorge when you are finished with your tour. An air-conditioned bus  (or heated – depending on the weather) is waiting for you with beverages to take you back to the welcome center, a few minutes away.

Easter Belles Parade

The Easter Parade is only in its second year, so this is an opportunity for you to help set the foundation for this event! Taking place Easter Sunday, March 31st at noon, this parade continue the tradition of Easter Parades started in the 1800s, honoring women, Springtime, fashion and culture of the times.

The parade starts at Gavioli Chapel (80 Mountain Street) with a Champagne toast and continues to the Crescent Hotel. Come out to see the ladies in all their finery! All proceeds go to helping women in chemotherapy treatment.

History of the Easter Parade

The Easter Parade is typically a somewhat informal event, not strongly religious in nature. Ladies participating in an Easter parade traditionally dress in new and fashionable clothing, particularly ostentatious hats, striving to impress others with their finery.

The Easter parade is closely associated with New York City’s Fifth Avenue, where fashion rules. However, Easter parades take place in many cities.  Starting as a spontaneous event in the 1870s, the New York parade became increasingly popular into the mid-20th century—in 1947, it was estimated to draw over a million people. From the 1880s through the 1950s, New York’s Easter parade was one of the main cultural expressions of Easter in the United States.

As the old saying goes, “If you’re lucky enough to be Irish, you’re lucky enough!” For the rest of us, St. Patrick’s Day is one of Eureka Springs’ major holidays and it is a chance to be Irish in spirit if not in genealogy.

The parade will start on Spring St. at 2 p.m. and wind its way to the courthouse downtown, less than a mile from our Inn. Come in green and you will be invited to march in the parade. What fun!  An annual event since 1993, the parade is very colorful,  just like Eureka Springs.

The parade is headed by the Krewe of Blarney Halfast Walkin’ Klub. The Kaptains consists of professionals, business men and political officials, all wearing tuxedos carrying Flower Canes. There is also usually a pub crawl downtown – get yourself a pint of green beer!

A Little ‘Saint Patrick’ History

I think he would approve of green beer, don’t you?

St. Patrick (circa 340 to 460 AD) was a British-born Christian missionary and is one of the three patron saints of Ireland. Patrick, captured by Irish raiders at age 16 and taken from his native Wales to Ireland as a slave, lived there six years before escaping. After entering the church, he returned to Ireland as a missionary. By the eighth century he had become the patron saint of Ireland.

While New Orleans is the city thought to have the monopoly on Mardi Gras fun, Eureka Springs is edging in. We’ve held our own celebration, Eureka Gras, for seven years now, and it is gaining more popularity all the time!

Mardi Gras Krewe of Krazo Hookers and Jokers Ball (Thursday February 7th, 6-10 p.m.) ~ Costumes are a must for this event! The themes are: “Hookers or Jokers,” “Gay 90s,” “Guys and Dolls” or “Freakin Eurekan.” Enjoy a cash bar and creole buffet. $20 in advance or $25 at the door, but be warned, seating is limited. There will be cash and prizes for the best costumes! Taking place at the Best Western Inn.

Eureka Gras Coronation Ball (Friday February 8th, 6-10 p.m.) ~ Get into the carnival spirit at this Masquerade Dance! Formal attire or costume is required, and makes the night much more fun! Witness the Eureka Gras King, Queen and Royal Court Promenade and Grand March. Enjoy live music by Swing and a Miss, as well as an extensive buffet and Champagne toast. The Beaux Arts Ball (Saturday February 9th, 7-11 p.m.) ~ Another costume ball, this time held in the Barefoot Ballroom of the Basin Park Hotel. $20 per person or $200 to reserve a table for a group. The party band Ultra Suede will be playing funk and disco. Admission is $25, plus a cash bar.
