Discover War Eagle Mill

Tuesday, October 4th, 2011

War Eagle Mill is located about 30 minutes from our Eureka Springs Bed and Breakfast. It is in a beautiful setting, has a fascinating history, and is well worth a visit any time of year.

welcome to war eagle

War Eagle Mill

A young couple named Sylvanus and Catherine Blackburn built the house that still stands at War Eagle Mill back in the early 1830s, when they moved into the valley from Tennessee. Shortly thereafter, they built a mill, for the closest mill at the time was 25 miles away. Business thrived as more and more homesteaders brought their corn to War Eagle Mill, and Sylvanus added a lumber mill to the building. The mill was lost to flooding in 1848, and Sylvanus rebuilt it. It was burned during the Civil War, and son J.A.C. rebuilt it. After changing hands, the mill burned again in 1924. It was rebuilt by the Medlin family in 1973, and it stands intact today.

Elise Roenigk runs War Eagle Mill nowadays, using it to create fresh, organic products. Visitors to the mill can watch it in operation and marvel at the technology that has kept people fed for so many centuries. Visitors are welcome to walk and bike the many trails on the property, to visit the Hobbs Nature Center, and to explore the rich history of the place. All this will undoubtedly spark an appetite, which can be satisfied at The Bean Palace restaurant, on the third floor of the mill.

Each spring and fall, War Eagle Mill hosts an Arts and Crafts fair. The Arts and Crafts Fair at War Eagle Mill is considered to be “the grandaddy of all Arkansas craft fairs”. If you love to peruse booth after booth of finely made arts and crafts, you’ll want to attend the War Eagle Mill Arts and Crafts Fair, October 13 – 16, 2011.

We still have availability at our Eureka Springs Bed and Breakfast the weekend of the Arts and Crafts Fair at War Eagle Mill. Come spend a few days meandering through the booths and enjoying the land at War Eagle Mill, and let us pamper you at our Eureka Springs Bed and Breakfast.

More information about the mill and Crafts Fair is available at War Eagle Mill.

Eureka Springs is a Cool Town

Thursday, September 8th, 2011

Arthur Frommer’s Budget Travel has named Eureka Springs number 4 in the 10 Coolest Small Towns in America 2011. We’re delighted. We’ve long known that Eureka Springs is special, and it’s reaffirming to learn that travel specialists think so, too.Come see just how cool Eureka Springs is.

Travelers unfamiliar with Arkansas are often surprised by the bucolic beauty of the state. We have rolling hills, waterfalls, and large, meandering rivers. Outdoor recreation is popular because nature beckons. Eureka Springs is surrounded by both large and small  lakes, many of which are tucked away in the Ozarks. To look out over the land is to see lush, green trees – except in the fall, of course, when the forests are bursting with color.

Eureka Springs itself feels like a European town. It’s built into a hill, and winding streets like the one leading to our Eureka Springs Bed and Breakfast invite exploration. The wealth of historic architecture heightens the sensation that the town is from a different time and place. In many respects, it doesn’t feel like America in the 21st century here.

Some folks call Eureka Springs the honeymoon capital of the Ozarks. It is certainly known for being romantic, and it is. We host many weddings, elopements, and honeymoons at our Bed and Breakfast Eureka Springs. Couples stay with us to celebrate their anniversaries and birthdays, or just to get away from their harried hectic lives. It’s easy to feel the spark of romance in a place as charming and quaint as Eureka Springs.

There’s a good chance you’ll fall in love while you stay at our Eureka Springs Bed and Breakfast. Many of our guests fall in love with Eureka Springs.

Thorncrown Chapel

Saturday, July 30th, 2011

Thorncrown Chapel inspires feelings of wonder and awe. It also exudes peace. To stand in it is to feel the power of nature and the grace of God.

Thorncrown Chapel Interior

Thorncrown Chapel

Thorncrown Chapel exists because one man decided to share beauty rather than enclose it. In 1971, school teacher Jim Reed and his wife purchased a stunning piece of land in the Ozarks. Their plan was to build a home and retire there. Over time, Jim noticed that people often stopped on his land to admire it and its view of the Ozarks, and he made a decision. In the ultimate spirit of hospitality, he and his wife would invite people to stop and rest here rather than shoo them away. They decided to build a glass chapel to welcome and inspire wayfarers.

At Reed’s bidding, Arkansas architect E. Fay Jones designed Thorncrown Chapel. He was inspired by Sainte Chappelle in Paris, and he ‘affectionately labeled Thorncrown’s style as “Ozark Gothic”‘. Built of glass, wood, flagstone, and a bit of steel, the chapel is a tribute to the beautiful land surrounding it.

The chapel is open to the public daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m, April through November, though it sometimes closes early for special events. It is located just west of town, a short drive from our Eureka Springs Bed and Breakfast. At this time of year, Sunday services are held at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m.  All are welcome.

Many guests of our Eureka Springs Arkansas Bed and Breakfast visit Thorncrown Chapel during their stay. They find it a truly peaceful and inspirational space. Perhaps you will, too.

Additional information is available at Thorncrown Chapel.

Cosmic Caverns are Top Ten "Must See" Caves

Tuesday, June 16th, 2009

Cosmic Caverns are located mid-way between Eureka Springs and Branson, Missouri.  They were discovered in 1845 by a prospector names John Moore, who was searching for lead.   The Cosmic Caverns are listed as one of America’s Top Ten “Must See” Caves and from the first glimpse you will be in awe of the natural beauty before your eyes.

Guided tours are offered of the Caves and take about 1 hour and 15 minutes.  You will be surprised at the temperature as the 62 degrees feels much warmer when combined with the high humidity.   During the tour you will explore many of nature’s wonders including formations, fault lines, fossils, and bottomless lakes, some of which include trout.  Also make sure to visit Silent Splendor, which was newly discovered in the early 1990 which houses one of the longest soda straw formations in the Ozarks measuring over 9 feet!

After you have completed the regular tour, perhaps you will be ready for some additional adventure!  Wild Cave Tours are available for 2-6 people.  There are some guidelines for clothing such as no skirts or shorts, and a long sleeved shirt is required.  Additionally, there is a minimum height requirement of 5’2”.  However, it is quite an adventure to see the exclusive parts of the cavern which are rarely seen.

Are you ready for the caves?

Arsenic & Old Lace Celebrates National Ice Tea Month

Monday, June 8th, 2009

Arsenic & Old Lace is celebrating the Seventh Annual National Iced Tea Month.  Being in the south, iced tea is really taken for granted.  However, iced tea was created in America nearly 100 years ago, so perhaps it’s only fitting that ours is the only country where the majority of tea is enjoyed cold. In fact, iced tea was invented because visitors to the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair were not interested in drinking hot tea on a hot day … so quick-thinking English tea merchant Richard Blechynden added ice, and the rest is history.

There are many benefits to drinking iced tea, in addition to just tasting great!

  • Tea has naturally occurring plant compounds that may play a role in helping the body fight certain cancers, assist with cholesterol, and support a healthy immune system.
  • Black and green have stronger antioxidant properties than many fruits and vegetables.  Antioxidants assist in limiting the development of chronic illnesses as cancer of heart disease.
  • Tea contains approximately the same amount of fluoride as fluoridated water and may help support healthy tooth enamel.
  • Lastly, drinking tea plays a significant role in maintaining fluid balance, which is crucial for normal body function.

Have you had your iced tea today?

Thorncrown Chapel in Eureka Springs is a "Must See"

Monday, June 1st, 2009

Imagine a building nestled in the Ozark Mountains that is 425 feet tall with over 6,000 sq. ft. of glass and has dimensions of 24 feet by 60 feet.  That is exactly what you will find when you visit the Thorncrown Chapel.  Thorncrown Chapel was designed by world renowned architect E. Fay Jones.  His inspiration for Thorncrown Chapel was Sainte Chappelle, Paris’ light filled gothic chapel. Fay affectionately labeled Thorncrown’s style as “Ozark Gothic.” The chapel is made with all organic materials to fit its natural setting. The only steel in the structure forms a diamond shaped pattern in its wooden trusses. The building has a native flagstone floor surrounded with a rock wall which gives the feeling that the chapel is part of its Ozark hillside. Chosen 4th on the AIA’s top designs of the 20th century.

Since the chapel opened in 1980, over five million people have visited this woodland sanctuary. It has won numerous architectural awards such as the American Institute of Architecture’s Design of the Year Award for 1981 and the American Institute of Architecture’s Design of the Decade Award for the 1980′s. Recently, members of the American Institute of Architects placed Thorncrown Chapel fourth on its list of the top buildings of the twentieth century.

Make sure to put it on your list when you visit!

Wind Chimes are Bigger in Eureka Springs!

Wednesday, April 8th, 2009

Eureka Springs has long been a haven for artists.  In 2005 one of those artists gave the town a new claim to fame.  Wind chime artist, Ranaga Farbiarz, erected the “World’s Largest Tuned Musical Wind Chime” in honor of his late father Ignatz Farbiarz, a survivor of the Holocaust.  It is located in the parking area of Celestial Windz Harmonic Bizaar, just south of Eureka Springs, and was erected with the help of a bucket truck and a 100-foot-tall oak tree. Its dimensions are 8 feet tall by 6 feet across.  As the centerpiece of the Harmonic Bizaar, it is available for free public viewing and hearing during regular gallery hours.  The chime was listed in the 2006 Guinnes Book of Records.  Definitely not to be missed!

After viewing these chimes, you will be ready to take some home with you!
