War Eagle Cavern at Beaver Lake

Devil´s Gap

Devil's Gap, as seen from the grounds of War Eagle Cavern.

War Eagle Cavern on Beaver Lake opened for the 2102 season on March 10. The cavern is an amazing place in a beautiful natural setting. Many guests of our Eureka Springs Bed and Breakfast have enjoyed visiting it.

The Ozark Plateau is home to thousands of caves, and War Eagle Cavern is one of the most spectacular. It sits on the south end of Beaver Lake, not far from Eureka Springs. The cavern is reachable by car and, surprisingly, by boat; the War Eagle Cavern boat dock is close to Devil’s Gap Inlet.

There are many attractions at War Eagle Cavern, both above ground and below. Above ground, visitors may pan for gems at the War Eagle Mining Co. and wander through the Lost in the Woods Maze. Walking trails traverse the grounds, featuring views of Beaver Lake, limestone bluffs, and sinkhole. Smoke Signal Cafe is a good spot to grab a bite to eat in the summer months, and there are many lovely spots to enjoy a picnic and watch for wildlife.

Things start to get really interesting, however, below the surface. The entrance to the cavern is a vast, natural opening that beckons the curious. Hour-long tours lead along wide walkways to spacious caverns, interesting formations, and an underground stream. The tour guides are very knowledgeable about both the history and geology of the cavern. You can even bring your well behaved dog with you.

If the regular tour isn’t enough for you, consider the Spelunker Tour. This isn’t for the faint of heart (or your dog); intrepid spelunkers will get wet and muddy. The reward? Bats, bats, and more bats! Eastern Pipestrelle bats and gray bats live in War Eagle Cavern, and most of them make their home away from the regular tour route.

An excursion to War Eagle Cavern is a wonderful way to connect with nature, and explore it. The cave is cool on hot summer days, and fascinating spring, summer, and fall.

Spring Break Special for Teachers

Tuesday, March 6th, 2012
Spring break special Eureka Springs B&B

Teachers, spend Spring Break at our Eureka Springs Bed and Breakfast.

Spring is in the air, which means it’s almost time for that wonderful annual tradition, Spring Break. The Eureka Springs School District celebrates Spring Break the week of March 19. Several school districts across the border in Missouri celebrate it the week of March 26, and still others take off the first week of April.

No matter when it falls in the calendar, one thing is certain: Spring Break is a well-deserved holiday for teachers, staff, and students alike.

To show faculty and staff how much we appreciate them, we offer a “School’s out! School’s out!” special at our Eureka Springs Bed and Breakfast. It is the best way we know to thank you for the hard work you do in preparing tomorrow’s leaders.

The special includes three nights lodging, a gourmet breakfast each morning, and plenty of homemade snacks and beverages throughout the day. In addition, we provide a $25 voucher good towards lunch or dinner at one of Eureka Springs’ six finest eateries, and a 40% discount on a 1 hour couples’ massage.

What you need during Spring Break is rest, relaxation, and a little pampering. Sleep in, and when you wake up, sit down to a delicious breakfast that you didn’t have to prepare. Explore the historic district of Eureka Springs at your leisure. Spend a day at the new Crystal Bridges Museum. Go for a paddle on Beaver Lake. Get a massage. Go horseback riding through the Ozark Mountains. Take a hike through Lake Leatherwood Park. Or bring a couple of really good books and lose yourself in them, emerging only to nibble a cookie and sip tea or wine.

The price of our “School’s out! School’s out!” special varies according to room. Please see Eureka Springs Bed and Breakfast Specials for more details.

Celebrate the American Spirit at Crystal Bridges Museum

Thursday, February 23rd, 2012
Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art

Allow time to visit Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art when next you stay at our Eureka Springs Inn.

We’re excited about Crystal Bridges Museum, which opened in nearby Bentonville last November. Nestled in a lovely natural setting, Crystal Bridges invites visitors to commune with art as much as nature.

Guests wander the trails (more than 3.5 miles of them) that meander through the 120-acre museum site. Trails lead through wetlands, over streams, and around ponds. The art here is nature, though sculptures are scattered throughout the grounds. Walk, bike, or find a peaceful place to sit and admire the view.

Inside the museum, permanent exhibits provide a superb overview of American Art. Crystal Bridges covers the Colonial period, the 19th Century, Modern American Art, and Contemporary American Art. Gaze at portraits of well known figures from our country’s past, such as George Washington. Stand before vast landscapes of the American West. See streetscapes by artists of the Ashcan School, and a good selection of Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art.

Current temporary exhibits include The North American Indian, by Edward Curtis, and The Arkansas Traveler, which explores an American folk story that’s an integral part of Arkansas’ mythology. Anyone unfamiliar with this aspect of Arkansas culture should find it intriguing.

Crystal Bridges Museum is approximately 40 miles from our Eureka Springs Bed and Breakfast. It’s a pleasant drive, whether you travel north of Beaver Lake or south of it.

If you are a regular guest at our Eureka Springs Bed and Breakfast, you probably look forward to visiting your favorite Eureka Springs restaurant while you’re here; we certainly have favorite eateries in every town we frequent. Life is full of risks, some richly rewarded, some not.

Discover War Eagle Mill

Tuesday, October 4th, 2011

War Eagle Mill is located about 30 minutes from our Eureka Springs Bed and Breakfast. It is in a beautiful setting, has a fascinating history, and is well worth a visit any time of year.

welcome to war eagle

War Eagle Mill

A young couple named Sylvanus and Catherine Blackburn built the house that still stands at War Eagle Mill back in the early 1830s, when they moved into the valley from Tennessee. Shortly thereafter, they built a mill, for the closest mill at the time was 25 miles away. Business thrived as more and more homesteaders brought their corn to War Eagle Mill, and Sylvanus added a lumber mill to the building. The mill was lost to flooding in 1848, and Sylvanus rebuilt it. It was burned during the Civil War, and son J.A.C. rebuilt it. After changing hands, the mill burned again in 1924. It was rebuilt by the Medlin family in 1973, and it stands intact today.

Elise Roenigk runs War Eagle Mill nowadays, using it to create fresh, organic products. Visitors to the mill can watch it in operation and marvel at the technology that has kept people fed for so many centuries. Visitors are welcome to walk and bike the many trails on the property, to visit the Hobbs Nature Center, and to explore the rich history of the place. All this will undoubtedly spark an appetite, which can be satisfied at The Bean Palace restaurant, on the third floor of the mill.

Each spring and fall, War Eagle Mill hosts an Arts and Crafts fair. The Arts and Crafts Fair at War Eagle Mill is considered to be “the grandaddy of all Arkansas craft fairs”. If you love to peruse booth after booth of finely made arts and crafts, you’ll want to attend the War Eagle Mill Arts and Crafts Fair, October 13 – 16, 2011.

We still have availability at our Eureka Springs Bed and Breakfast the weekend of the Arts and Crafts Fair at War Eagle Mill. Come spend a few days meandering through the booths and enjoying the land at War Eagle Mill, and let us pamper you at our Eureka Springs Bed and Breakfast.

More information about the mill and Crafts Fair is available at War Eagle Mill.

Peak Foliage – Elusive and Enchanting

Thursday, September 22nd, 2011

Autumn is the most glorious time to visit Eureka Springs and the Ozarks. Forests change their muted greens for lively reds, oranges, and yellows. The air turns slightly more crisp, especially in the morning and evening. During the peak, it’s impossible to ignore the glory of nature.

autumn falls...

Experience the glory of nature in the Arkansas Ozarks.

Alas, knowing just when the leaves will peak isn’t easy. Some years the leaves seem to turn all at once; other years they tease us, one tree turning today, another tree turning next week. The good thing is that they’re always beautiful, no matter when they turn.

Our Eureka Springs Bed and Breakfast is in the heart of the Arkansas Ozarks. Arkansas autumns may not enjoy the fame of New England falls, but that’s not because they don’t deserve it. Fall foliage is spectacular here, too.

Fall colors are expected to peak soon; traditionally we peak in mid October to Early November. Our Eureka Springs Bed and Breakfast is filling fast, as leaf peepers and those seeking an autumn adventure make their plans. We encourage you to make your Fall Foliage reservations soon.
