Harry Houdini the Magician

Houdini Seance halloween nightHoudini was fascinated with spiritualism throughout his life and pondered the ability to communicate with the spirit world. Before his death, he promised his wife Bess that he would communicate with her if he were able. Houdini died in 1926 on Halloween and Bess held yearly séances on that same date for ten years.

This year, on October 31st, Sean-Paul and Juliane Fay of Intrigue Theater will hold a séance and attempt to contact Houdini’s spirit. “While there have been perhaps hundreds of Houdini séances in the past 86 years – we don’t know of one ever conducted in a place as haunted as the Crescent Hotel,” says Juliane. Join Sean-Paul and Juliane for The Best of Intrigue Theater followed by a Houdini Séance beginning at 10 p.m. on Halloween night!

Other Houdini Escape: The Milk Can

Following the successful escape of a strait jacket, suspended upside down, by Sean-Paul of Intrigue Theater earlier this month, he now sets out to do the following…

A re-enactment of Houdini’s milk can escape of 1901.

Intrigue Theater has located and obtained a 70-year-old 30 gallon Milk Can. In the Spirit of Houdini’s Milk Can escape, bearing the unforgettable slogan, “Failure means a drowning death!” we submit the following challenge:

“Following an exhaustive inspection of the can and lid by members of the crowd, we hereby challenge Sean-Paul to be handcuffed, stuffed into the milk can filled with water and the lid sealed with 4 padlocks.  We are anxious to see if Sean-Paul can escape from such conditions or if he will have to rap on the sides of the milk can with the handcuffs to signal a rescue from EMTs standing by.”

The escape takes place on October 20 at 7 p.m. in the Basin Spring Park, less than a mile from our Eureka Springs Bed and Breakfast. We want to provide you with your very own escape – come join us and get in on the fun!

Get the Blues in Eureka Springs

Eureka Springs Blues Weekend, Ruthie Foster

Ruthie Foster in Eureka Springs.

The 2012 Eureka Springs Blues Weekend is coming up, May 31 through June 2. As of this writing, we still have an opening at our Eureka Springs Bed and Breakfast that weekend.

Blues Weekend is the final act of the Eureka Spring May Festival of the Arts, and it’s hard to imagine a better way to wrap up a month devoted to art and creativity.

The blues is all about transforming suffering into beauty. Your lady up and left you, you lost your job, and your dog died. What do you do? You pick up a guitar and let the whole world know. In doing so, you overcome. That’s the power of creativity right there. That’s art.

Some of the biggest names in Blues will be performing in Eureka Springs May 31-June 2. They are Marquise Knox and The Cate Brothers, the Tommy Castro Band and the Ruthie Foster Band. Well known musicians and up and coming musicians will take the stage in The Basin Park Hotel Barefoot Ballroom, The Auditorium, Basin Spring Park, and various restaurants and clubs around town.

The Basin Spring Park shows are free and open to all. Other shows require tickets, and advance tickets are suggested.

Our Eureka Springs Bed and Breakfast is close to the Blues Weekend venues. Come listen to the Blues. It will cheer you.

Tickets and additional information are available at Eureka Springs Blues Weekend.

Jazz Eureka, 2011

Friday, September 2nd, 2011

Jazz Aficionados, take note. Jazz Eureka takes place the weekend of September 23 – 25, 2011, at Basin Spring Park in Eureka Springs. This event is free – yes, free – to one and all. Best of all, we still have rooms available at our Eureka Springs Bed and Breakfast.

See Hogtown Hot Club at Basin Spring Park during Jazz Eureka.

There are many different faces of jazz, and many sounds to go along with those faces. The 2011 Jazz Eureka line-up underscores the diversity of the genre. Highlights include:

  • Hogtown Hot Club: Gypsy jazz and American Swing via acoustic quartet.
  • Trio de Janero: Samba. Need any more be said?
  • SMSU Jazz Band: They’ve played some of the biggest jazz festivals in the world, and now they’ll play Eureka Springs.

You’re sure to hear something you like at Jazz Eureka. Bring blankets, lawn chairs, and a picnic, and spend the weekend relaxing in beautiful Basin Spring Park.

The shops, galleries, and restaurants of historic downtown Eureka Springs are just steps from Basin Spring Park. When you feel the need to stretch your legs, you’ll find there’s plenty to do and see in town. Keep an ear cocked as you stroll through town – many restaurants will feature live music in conjunction with Jazz Eureka.

Our Eureka Springs Bed and Breakfast is located close to the heart of downtown Eureka Springs. Guests who are walkers or cyclists (and don’t mind hills) frequently leave cars parked at the inn and explore town on foot.  While there is in-town parking for folks who prefer to drive many guests enjoy the Eureka Springs Trolley and leaving the driver to someone else.
