Eureka Springs has two wineries. Visiting them and tasting some of the wine there is a great thing to do in Eureka Springs when you come into town to visit. Here is a little information about the wineries to get you started.

Keels Creek Winery, 3185 E Van Buren: The vines are located in the hills above Keels Creek, south on Rock House Road about 3 miles from the city limits of Eureka Springs. Eight acres of land planted in 2004 and 2005 now contains eight varieties of grapes.

May Festival of the Arts: Fun After 5 and the Artrageous Street Festival

May 10th, 2013

As we continue our coverage of the May Festival of the Arts in Eureka Springs, we share with you some other outstanding events coming up in May – we hope you can join us.

May 24 – Creative Energy Project & Eureka Street Market. The Creative Energy Project conducts impressive community art creations in Eureka Springs. Here is a little blurb about the project and their mission:

“Energy fuels and finesses creativity; propelling the paintbrush and pen, powering our vision, giving form to the words we use to speak. Beyond the tangible is a subtler kind of energy; unpredictable and elusive: Creative Energy. At the genesis of every creative idea is this energy of inspiration. It births art itself, transcends space and time to speak the thoughts of the artist long after the artist’s work is done…What is certain is that this is the wellspring of imagination. Our goal is to capture Creative Energy as it is applied to the world around us in creative visual expression. To show unquantifiable imagination in the environments that we inhabit every day. This is the Creative Energy Project.” – The Creative Energy Project

Here is a video about a recent Creative Energy Project by Robert Norman:

May 25 – Artrageous Fair in Basin Park. Enjoy music and art in beautiful Basin Park! Free and open to everyone from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Enjoy a children’s art section, live music and lots of artists with their work for sale and on display.

Come to Eureka Springs for the weekend and take home a piece of art you can treasure!

New Zip Line in Eureka Springs

April 13th, 2013

Maybe you’ve heard about zip lining on tropical vacations to Costa Rica or the rainforest. Well, we now have one of these intensely fun attractions here in Eureka Springs! Fun for both kids and adults, the Ozark Mountain Ziplines is now open for the summer 2013 season!

Experience the thrill of a Zip Line Canopy Tour right in the heart of the beautiful Ozark Mountains. imageSoar amongst the trees 200+ feet above the ground from one platform to another – some as far as 1800 feet away from each other. See the vast, gorgeous, Ozark hardwood trees and limestone cliffs in a whole new way!

Ozark Mountain Zipline is designed to offer a completely safe experience. The trained staff oversees the ziplining and delivers two hours of fun per tour for any person, age 3 and up.

What is a Zip Line?

From a structural standpoint, the zip line tour is a system of cables and platforms, wherein the participant “zips” through the treetops wearing a safety harness secured to the cable. Wooden platforms suspended by cables serve as a landing base in each tree that you “zip” to and from. You also launch from limestone cliffs. All natural and minimal hiking on clear trails brings you to the bottom of the gorge when you are finished with your tour. An air-conditioned bus  (or heated – depending on the weather) is waiting for you with beverages to take you back to the welcome center, a few minutes away.

Each tour is $89 per person (plus tax). Group rates are available as well, call (479) 363-6699 for more information.

Spring Events in Eureka Springs!

March 12th, 2013

Finally, the winter is coming to a close and Spring returns to Eureka Springs with all it’s joy, warmth and blossoms. It is truly a lovely time to come visit our city, as landscaping begins to really pop with color and restaurants dust off their outdoor seating sections. To celebrate spring and the rebirth it signifies, Eureka Springs holds a parade. If you don’t know already, we’re kinda into parades in this town!

Easter Belles Parade

The Easter Parade is only in its second year, so this is an opportunity for you to help set the foundation for this event! Taking place Easter Sunday, March 31st at noon, this parade continue the tradition of Easter Parades started in the 1800s, honoring women, Springtime, fashion and culture of the times.

The parade starts at Gavioli Chapel (80 Mountain Street) with a Champagne toast and continues to the Crescent Hotel. Come out to see the ladies in all their finery! All proceeds go to helping women in chemotherapy treatment.

Would You Like to Participate?

All that is required to walk in the parade is a hat and gloves! That, and a donation of any size to the Easter Belles charity. Learn more about making a donation on the Easter Belle’s website.

The Historic Easter Parade in New York City, late 19th Century

The Historic Easter Parade in New York City, late 19th Century

Most of the ladies ride in horse drawn carriages or in convertible vehicles, but you can also stroll – as long as you are dressed fashionably!

History of the Easter Parade

The Easter Parade is typically a somewhat informal event, not strongly religious in nature. Ladies participating in an Easter parade traditionally dress in new and fashionable clothing, particularly ostentatious hats, striving to impress others with their finery.

The Easter parade is closely associated with New York City’s Fifth Avenue, where fashion rules. However, Easter parades take place in many cities.  Starting as a spontaneous event in the 1870s, the New York parade became increasingly popular into the mid-20th century—in 1947, it was estimated to draw over a million people. From the 1880s through the 1950s, New York’s Easter parade was one of the main cultural expressions of Easter in the United States.

Come Visit Eureka Springs this Month!

We hope you will come and visit us in Arkansas this lovely spring! We would love to host you in our Eureka Springs Inn, conveniently located minutes from downtown and the parade route.

The St. Patrick’s Day Parade is Coming!

February 12th, 2013

While the Mardi Gras parades have all run their course, more fun is to be had in the streets of Eureka Springs. The Saint Patrick’s Day parade is taking place on Saturday March 16th this year.

As the old saying goes, “If you’re lucky enough to be Irish, you’re lucky enough!” For the rest of us, St. Patrick’s Day is one of Eureka Springs’ major holidays and it is a chance to be Irish in spirit if not in genealogy.

The parade will start on Spring St. at 2 p.m. and wind its way to the courthouse downtown, less than a mile from our Inn. Come in green and you will be invited to march in the parade. What fun!  An annual event since 1993, the parade is very colorful,  just like Eureka Springs.

The parade is headed by the Krewe of Blarney Halfast Walkin’ Klub. The Kaptains consists of professionals, business men and political officials, all wearing tuxedos carrying Flower Canes. There is also usually a pub crawl downtown – get yourself a pint of green beer!

A Little ‘Saint Patrick’ History

I think he would approve of green beer, don't you?

I think he would approve of green beer, don’t you?

St. Patrick (circa 340 to 460 AD) was a British-born Christian missionary and is one of the three patron saints of Ireland. Patrick, captured by Irish raiders at age 16 and taken from his native Wales to Ireland as a slave, lived there six years before escaping. After entering the church, he returned to Ireland as a missionary. By the eighth century he had become the patron saint of Ireland.

It appears Patrick was active as a missionary in Ireland during the second half of the fifth century. Two letters from him survive, along with later hagiographies — books of saints’ lives — from the seventh century onward.
Pious legend credits Patrick with banishing snakes from the island, though all evidence suggests that post-glacial Ireland never had snakes. One suggestion is that snakes referred to the serpent symbolism of the Druids of that era. Legend also credits Patrick with teaching the Irish about the concept of the Trinity by showing people the shamrock, or three-leaf clover, using it as a metaphor for that Christian belief.
March 17 is believed to be his death date and is the date celebrated as his feast day. St. Patrick has never been formally canonized by a Pope. Even so, he is still widely venerated in Ireland and elsewhere today.
